When the city of Hartwell was laid out by the planners in May, 1854, the site on the corner of East Howell and Chandler Streets was designated Lot #112 for "the Baptist Church."
Five years later, First Baptist Church was organized in the Hart County courthouse by a small group who professed the Baptist faith. These worshippers and those who joined with them constructed the first church in 1870 on that designated site. It was a wooden building that served until 1896 when it was replaced with a yellow brick sanctuary.
The three story education building was constructed in 1950, and the present sanctuary in 1965. In 1975 the gym was built, and in 2002 another addition included an education wing, music suite and fellowship hall.
